The Inductive Coupling of the Magnets in MICE and its Effect on Quench Protection

Abstract: Fig. 1. The MICE Cooling channel with the two tracker magnets. The 18-coil system is coupled together magnetically.Abstract-The inductive coupling between various MICE magnet circuits is described. The consequences of this coupling on magnet charging and quenching are discussed. Magnet quench protection is achieved through the use of quench-back. Calculations of the quenching of a magnet due to quench-back resulting from circulating currents induced in the magnet mandrel due to quenching of an adjacent magnet … Show more

“…Tables 1 and 2 present the inductance matrices for circuits S, M2, M1, F, C1 and C2 in the flip and non-flip modes [6]. The coils in the three AFC modules are connected in series to form circuit F. Coupling coils C1 and C2 are individually powered.…”

“…The coupling between the various magnet circuits manifests itself in how the magnets are affected during a quench and the fact the quenching of one group of magnets in MICE will cause adjacent magnets to quench [6].…”

“…The relevant physical parameters of the five coils are given in Table I [3], [4]. The magnet and its shields are cooled by five two-stage 4.2 K coolers [5], [6]. The electrical diagram for the magnet is shown in Fig.…”

“…It is particularly effective in a situation where the normal zone hits boundaries early in the quench process and thereafter spreads very slowly in the other dimensions [3][4][5]. When magnets are connected in series, quench-back can potentially cause the other magnets to quench even if they are not inductively coupled [6] [7].…”
