Summary This paper presents a simple, practical, and effective design, analysis, and selection approach of a capacitor‐run single phase induction motor as a manufacturing aid tool at the early stage of the design. The standard industrial motor frame sizes as well as the current design trends of larger lengths and smaller diameters—which are not likely presented in literature—are taken into account. At first, to verify the proposed approach, a sample single phase induction motor design is obtained regarding certain requirements, based mainly on the classic output coefficient concept. Then, numerous simulations over a large number of candidate motor topologies are conducted. This series of investigations is performed initially with respect to (1) certain operational industrial criteria, (2) the number of stator and rotor slots, and (3) the rotor cage material. After the relevant results are presented and commented, a selection strategy of an appropriate design is also proposed. Also, the effect of the running capacitor value is examined. It is seen that the total design and selection procedure are verified very satisfactorily. Finally, useful conclusions from a manufacturer's point of view are also extracted, dealing with important operational characteristics of the motor, such as power factor, winding currents phase shift, total losses, starting/rated torque ratio, efficiency, and other.

Summary In this paper, it is aimed to design an original axial flux synchronous reluctance motor (AF‐SynRM), which has not been studied in the literature, has multiple barriers in its rotor, and to produce prototype of this motor. In the preliminary study of the AF‐SynRM design, analytical calculations are made on the rotor in two different topologies barrier types, multiple barrier structures, and three different insulation rates. It is modeled with the 3D finite element method (FEM). Torque, torque ripple, saliency ratio, shaft power, and efficiency parameters are analyzed. In the model that gives the best the results analytically, the model is ready for production by changing the barrier geometry with genetic algorithm (GA) based optimization analysis, reducing the torque ripple and completing the structural analysis. The model is made ready for prototype production. Compared to the radial flux model with the same power rating with the proposed design method, 2.2 kW EA‐SynRM prototype with higher torque density and lower volume was produced. The prototype produced has been tested according to the criteria of IEC TS 60034‐30‐2 and has the IEC 60034‐30‐1:2014 IE4 Super Premium efficiency class. Torque, torque ripple, power factor, shaft power, torque per amper, and efficiency parameters are analyzed and compared with simulation results. It will be a good alternative in applications where high efficiency and torque are desired with its lack of copper losses due to the absence of a cage in the rotor and low maintenance costs with its magnet less structure.

The single-phase induction motors (SPIMs) are widely used in several household and industrial applications and thus millions of them are produced every year. Despite the fact that their output power is low, their efficiency enhancement could lead to significant energy savings. The SPIMs are included to the new industrial efficiency standards for commercial motors. Consequently, the minimum efficiency that the SPIMs have to present is that of IE3 (premium-efficiency). The already conducted research efforts have not provided a robust and acceptable-from economical and manufacturing point of view-design procedure toward their efficiency improvement. For this purpose, a novel design methodology is proposed here. It is proven that the required efficiency ratings are achievable with the increment of the motor's axial length, the proper design of the rotor bar slot and the careful selection of the auxiliary to main winding turns ratio along with the value of the used capacitor. Aiming to verify its effectiveness, the presented methodology has been applied to SPIMs with different output power ratings. Moreover, the derived results are compared to the corresponding ones obtained from other design strategies. The motor's nominal performance and its behavior during the start-up phase have been determined through finite element analysis.
