The Indo-Pacific Sergeant Abudefduf vaigiensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825) (Perciformes: Pomacentridae) in Libya, South-Central Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: The Indo-Pacific Sergeant Abudefduf vaigiensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825) (Chordata: Pisces: Actinopterygii: Perciformes: Pomacentridae) is first recorded in the south-central Mediterranean Sea (Libya), based on the external morphology and the barcoding of a fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. Present sightings from field surveys and social media include juveniles, sub-adults, and a single adult specimen, suggesting that the species is now established in Libyan waters. No certainties occur reg… Show more

“…More recently, a specimen was recorded in Malta in 2012 (Evans et al, 2016). Three specimens Osca et al, 2020;Pirkenseer, 2020;Zenetos & Miliou, 2020). All specimens were generally observed in very shallow waters, in 2-4 m depth on hard bottoms.…”

“…Remarks: As the present specimen was not sampled, we cannot provide an identification at a species level. Four non‐native Abudefduf species have been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea so far, although the majority of the records are for the Atlantic A. saxatilis (Linnaeus, 1758) and the Indo‐Pacific A. vaigiensis (Quoy & Gamard, 1825), which have been recorded from all over the Mediterranean Sea (see Dragičević et al ., 2021; Osca et al ., 2020; Pirkenseer, 2020; Zenetos & Miliou, 2020). All specimens were generally observed in very shallow waters, in 2–4 m depth on hard bottoms.…”

“…Our example from Johnston Atoll is part of this biogeographic phenomenon of A. vaigiensis dispersal from the equatorial Pacific to the Hawaiian Islands. A. vaigiensis is a vigorous species which also recently invaded the Mediterranean Sea [39] and will hybridize with congeners elsewhere [40].…”
