The complex theological treatment of the person as imago Dei has focused on ontological, functional, relational or eschatological interpretations, which either belong or possibly belong to all human beings. It is however unusual to encounter a reflection on the person’s intrinsic uniqueness as imago Dei. For Edith Stein intrinsic or a priori individuality refers to a unique quality of the person’s soul which unfolds more or less fully in the unity of the person’s body-soul-spirit unity: «the soul is destined for eternal being, and this destination explains why the soul is called upon to be an image of God in a “wholly personal manner.”» (FEB 504 [422]) This ontological approach contributes to a consideration of interpersonal enrichment through love, as a way to personal fulfilment and to complementarity through communion. An ontological approach to personal individuality thus paradoxically leads to the discovery of the existential primacy of relationality.

Toda teoria psicológica, assim como a práxis que dela deriva, apresenta uma antropologia filosófica implícita. Em relação ao domínio da clínica, cujo eixo norteador é o fenômeno humano, entende-se que essa precisa estar embasada em um sólido e rigoroso fundamento antropológico, capaz de abarcar o especificamente humano. Diante disso, esse estudo tem como objetivo apontar para a possibilidade de uma fundamentação antropológico-fenomenológica da clínica, buscando compreender o homem em sua peculiaridade essencial, isto é, o seu caráter espiritual que o institui na qualidade de um ser pessoal e individual. Realizou-se então uma descrição da dimensão do espírito, partindo das análises empreendidas por Edmund Husserl e Edith Stein. Foram utilizadas como fontes bibliográficas as obras: “Ideias Para uma Fenomenologia Pura e para uma Filosofia Fenomenológica – livro segundo: investigações fenomenológicas sobre a constituição”, de Husserl, além de “Contribuições para uma Fundamentação Filosófica da Psicologia e das ciências do espírito” e “Ato e Potência” de autoria da filósofa Edith Stein. A partir dessas análises, foi possível concluir que o sujeito da clínica apresenta uma dimensão espiritual, inaugurada através dos atos intencionais, o que o coloca como um ser desperto, consciente, ativo, livre, indeterminado e capaz de formar a si mesmo.
