There is a rapidly growing body of literature on the theory about the ecosystem service concept and the practical assessment of ecosystem services in different contexts ranging from natural to urban environments. Yet, where does the concept reach its limits? This paper critically reflects the application of the ecosystem service concept in urban environments illustrating the handling of urban structures (incl. built-up areas) and the risk that the normative principle of the concept could be missed. It is shown that in theory urban structures refer to a variety of ecosystem concepts. As a starting point for ecosystem service assessments, these could be classified into natural, managed, constructed and overbuilt systems. Since ecosystem service concepts do not directly refer to a specific ecosystem definition, but to biophysical structures and processes, all of these classes could be included. However, the dependency on context and scale makes a differentiation in practical ecosystem services assessment challenging. We conclude that the ecosystem service concept does not reach its limits in urban environments, but urban environments represent an extreme case characterized by multifunctionality and a high degree of modification that enables to uncover research challenges applying in any environment. There is a need for a more transparent reporting of theoretical and methodological assumptions to facilitate the comparability between ecosystem service assessments. Comprehensive approaches that consider multiple ecosystem services and include human input, human modification, the ecosystem status as well as their interactions are required to understand the spatial relations between ecosystem services delivered by different ecosystems.

A alteração do defeso é a principal reivindicação dos pescadores; constatou-se ainda que a maioria dos trabalhadores que recebem o seguro-defeso não teriam direito ao bene cio, pois atuam na preparação do pescado. Palavras-chave: gestão pesqueira; defeso; legislação pesqueira. Abstract: Aiming to contribute to the management of ar sanal fi sheries, the legal aspects of the ac vity in the city of Penha, SC, were evaluated, with emphasis on the seabob-shrimp (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri). A total of 36 standards that regulate this ac vity were iden fi ed, many of which are ineff ec ve. Changing the closed season is the main claim of fi shermen; it was also observed that the majority of the workers who receive the insurance are not en tled to the benefi t as they are involved in the prepara on of the fi sh. Résumé: Pour contribuer à la ges on de la pêche ar sanale de la creve e Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, les aspects juridiques de l'ac vité dans la Ville de Penha ont été évalués. Au tout, 36 normes règlent ce e pêche, beaucoup d'entre elles ineffi caces ou probléma ques comme la période de fermeture. Le changement de ce e période est la principale revendica on des pêcheurs. En outre, il fut possible d'observer que la plupart des travailleurs n'auraient pas le droit de toucher l'assurance-chômage, car ils travaillent au traitement du poisson. Mots-clés: ges on de la pêche; période de fermeture; aspects juridiques. Resumen: Buscando contribuir a la ges ón de la pesca, se evaluaron los aspectos jurídicos de la ac vidad en el municipio de Penha, SC, destacando el cierre del camarón siete barbas (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri). Se iden fi có 36 normas que regulan la ac vidad, muchas de las cuales son inefi caces. Cambio de la temporada del cierre es la principal demanda de los pescadores; se observó, aunque la mayoría de los trabajadores que reciben el seguro de cierre no tendría derecho a la prestación, ya que actúan en la preparación de pescado.
