The income elasticity gap and its implications for economic growth and tourism development: the Balearic vs the Canary Islands

Abstract: The Balearic and the Canary Islands are two well-known tourism-led economies. They both experienced a tourism boom during the same decades, and, hence, they developed a similar productive-mix. Nevertheless, there are strong economic differences between the two regions. While the Balearic Islands enjoy a high GDP per capita, the Canary Islands show a more modest performance. The results of a panel data regression confirm our hypothesis that they differ substantially in terms of income elasticity of tourism. It … Show more

“…Findings reveal that economic growth is positively correlated to sustainable tourism development. The study results are consistent with the study of Inchausti-Sintes et al ( 2021 ) and Moslehpour et al ( 2022 ), which examines the role of economic growth in accelerating and sustaining tourism development, and according to them, when any country shows rapid progress, the financial strength of the government and individual business enterprises increases, especially those which are engaged in tourism activities. This enhances their power to execute the strategies and plans for the improvement in the tourism services like infrastructure, accommodation, recreation, and traveling, so that the tourists’ interest can be aroused and maintained.…”

“…Both archipelagos are considered small open economies formed by 19 sectors and two representative consumers (domestic households and tourists) and one central government, which form their expectations in a looking-backward manner. Furthermore, the model assumes an income elasticity of 2.33% and 1.6% for the tourism goods demanded by tourists for the Balearic and the Canary Islands, respectively (Inchausti-Sintes et al, 2020). All sectors operate under competitive market behaviour and there is ‘perfect factor mobility’.…”

“…Ulucak et al (2020) find that tourism is generally income and price inelastic in Turkey. This highlights that although international tourism is generally considered a luxury product (Inchausti-Sintes et al, 2021), for some destinations, it is a necessity (Waqas-Awan et al, 2021). The system GMM (SGMM) method is applied by Li et al (2017) who find that tourism in 19 major Chinese cities is impacted by climatic factors, and by Muryani et al (2021) who find that per-capita income, relative prices and room availability positively affect tourism demand in Indonesia.…”
