The incidence of musculoskeletal injuries: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Aims The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to gather epidemiological information on selected musculoskeletal injuries and to provide pooled injury-specific incidence rates. Methods PubMed (National Library of Medicine) and Scopus (Elsevier) databases were searched. Articles were eligible for inclusion if they reported incidence rate (or count with population at risk), contained data on adult population, and were written in English language. The number of cases and population at risk were coll… Show more

“…Musculoskeletal trauma is a common presentation in the emergency department (ED), with incidence rates as high as >400 per 100 000 person-years [1]. Tramadol is recommended in various pain management guidelines as the analgesia of choice for musculoskeletal trauma pain [2] due to its nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs)-sparing effects [3].…”

“…1,6 A recent meta-analysis of musculoskeletal injuries in adults reported an estimated annual incidence of tibia and femur shaft fractures at 20.8/100,000 and 12.2/100,000 persons per year, respectively. 12 Based on these data, with more than 258,000,000 million adults in the United States as of 2021, an estimated 53,664 tibia shaft fractures and 31,476 femur fractures occur per year. 13 If all of these fractures underwent intramedullary nail fixation using single-use reamer shafts, this would result in an extraneous cost of $24.8 million dollars and more than 37,000 lbs of metal waste per year based on the data used in this study.…”

“…Tendon-bone insertion injury damage levels are high and frequently disabling, and the incidence rate is increasing annually. 1,2 According to previous surveys, [3][4][5] the incidence of rotator cuff injury alone is 19.0% to 32.0%; in the USA, over 250,000 rotator cuff repair operations are performed each year, and the rate of retearing after two years is 11.0% to 94.0%. 4 Nearly half of the patients' postoperative pain persists without relief.…”
