The incidence of mucinous appendiceal malignancies: a population-based study

Abstract: The reported incidence of mucinous adenocarcinomas of the appendix shows an increasing trend. This is probably mainly explained by the increased awareness of this tumour and its relation with PMP, and better registration of this specific diagnosis.

“…In addition, age at diagnosis has decreased over the same time period . A similar pattern of increase in incidence and decrease in age at diagnosis was observed in a large registry study from the Netherlands spanning 1980–2010 . The trends over time in incidence, demographics, type of surgery, and survival of patients with AMN were analyzed using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program database .…”

“…This has led to the adoption of this approach as the standard therapy for advanced AMN disease. [14][15][16][17] Although natural history and prognosis of AMN has been studied in single-institution studies, these studies were all rather small (N = 50 to 164) [18][19][20][21] and of limited generalizability except for 1 multicenter retrospective report (N = 2298). 15 This knowledge gap can be addressed through population-based studies that rely on national cancer surveillance data.…”

“…7 Other studies have found the incidence of appendiceal adenocarcinoma to be approximately 0.15 to 0.8 per 100 000, occurring in adults of any age with a peak incidence generally in the sixth decade. 8,[28][29][30] Mucinous appendiceal neoplasms without infiltrative invasion…”
