The Incidence of Dupuytren’s Disease in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract: Some conditions commonly associated with Dupuytren's disease are well-known. No attention has been paid to conditions with a significantly low incidence of Dupuytren's. A large number of patients with rheumatoid arthritis were studied, and were found to have a statistically significantly lower incidence of Dupuytren's disease, than was observed by the same clinicians in age, sex, matched controlled patients.

“…A history of rheumatoid arthritis has a negative correlation with DD [4,39]. There may be a common genetic pathway in the development of carpal tunnel syndrome and DD with chromosomal instability present in the palmar fascia in both of these conditions [11].…”

“…There is a statistically significant lower incidence of the condition in patients with rheumatoid arthritis than in age-and gender-matched control subjects. 107 In the Reykjavik study 108 it was suggested that the reason for a negative association with joint complaints was not clear but that genetic and immunological factors may be important. Murrell et al, 48 based on their work with oxygen free radicals, have suggested that the lower prevalence in rheumatoid disease may be due to the administration of large quantities of prostaglandin inhibitors.…”

“…A combined analysis of 10 studies 12,15,[24][25][26][35][36][37]39,42 representing information on prevalences for the population in different age groups showed an overall relationship that is visualized in the upper graph of Figure 2. In the middle and lower graph of Figure 2, this relationship is shown respectively for females (8 studies ).…”

“…First of all, only few studies mentioned that they applied sampling to select their participants. 15,23,31,35,39 However, three of these studies did not describe the method of sampling. 23,31,35 If participants are not randomly selected, this increases the risk of selection bias, and makes it thereby difficult to extrapolate data from the studies.…”
