The incidence of dental caries in children and adolescents who have cerebral palsy and are participating in a dental program in Brazil

Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe the incidence of caries among children and adolescents who have cerebral palsy. The authors conducted baseline and follow-up dental examinations of 118 children and adolescents with cerebral palsy in a specialized healthcare unit in São Paulo, Brazil. Family care-givers completed a questionnaire that provided socioeconomic and behavioral information. The analysis used multivari-ate Poisson regression models adjusted for age. More than half (52.5%) of the subjects had at le… Show more

“…It is also relevant to this discussion to emphasize that, in this study, the severely oromotor compromised cerebral palsy individuals presented higher values of the caries experience index for both dentitions [22][23][24] , with higher prevalence of untreated caries 25 , which is in agreement with the literature [26][27] . In addition, the presence of pathological oral reflex of tonic bite 4 makes tooth brushing, biofilm control and dental floss use more difficult, which directly impacts on oral hygiene 27 .…”

“…Classification of the levels of oral motor dysfunction in CP children is essential to determine peculiarities in the stomatognathic structures that could be correlated with caries experience. Individuals with CP that exhibited severely compromised oromotor function presented higher values for the DMF‐T index for both dentitions, with a higher prevalence of untreated caries. The oral hygiene of CP patients may be influenced by the pathological oral reflex of tonic bite and difficulties in tooth brushing, biofilm control, and flossing.…”

“…Dental caries is an oral health burden in both the primary and permanent dentition of CP individuals, as these patients exhibit higher percentages of decayed and lost teeth than non‐CP individuals. Children with CP can display low unstimulated salivary flow rates, pH and buffer capacity, variation in enzyme activities, and sialic acid concentrations.…”

“…A doença 'cárie' , em indivíduos com PC, é impactante e ocorre tanto na dentição decídua como na permanente [3][4][5]25,26 . Em relação ao risco à cárie, observa-se a polarização da doença nessa população 4,5,8,27,28 .…”
