The incidence of breastfeeding in our environment

Abstract: The rate of breastfeeding is high (91%). Among mothers with previous children, there is a greater trend to change from artificial feeding to breastfeeding (74% vs 7%; p < 0.002). The mother's educational level is the most important positive factor, and the early giving of supplements the most important negative factor.

“…Possible explanations for this finding in the present study could be that women of younger age and lower education might be more familiar with the breastfeeding culture or more likely to be unemployed or employed in less demanding jobs, which may facilitate the decision for exclusive breastfeeding. Employment is generally considered as a factor that has a negative impact on breastfeeding initiation [18], while multiparae women are reported to breastfeed their infants to a higher rate [17,19,20], as in our study.…”

“…However, nearly 70% of mothers who intended to breastfeed did not initiate breastfeeding within 1 h after delivery and 77% of babies had been given supplements during their stay in hospital. Early initiation of breastfeeding and not giving supplements are important factors for establishing successful breastfeeding of a longer duration 12,13 . Despite the stated hospital policy that mothers should be helped to initiate breastfeeding within 0.5 h of birth in the delivery suite, routine maternity procedures may play a role in delaying the initiation of the first breastfeed.…”
