The incidence of barley yellow dwarf viruses in wheat in Victoria

Abstract: Wheat crops from all major wheat-growing districts throughout Victoria were sampled during September 1984. Examination of pooled samples by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with an antiserum to a mixture of two barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) types ('V1') showed that 10 out of 26 crops were infected with BYDV and 3 out of 26 had a BYDV incidence greater than 10%. The overall loss in yield likely to result from BYDV was estimated at 2% with a far greater loss in some crops. Frozen-stored samples from … Show more

“…(1990) in the southern part of Western Australia, where 29% of the cereal crops were found to be infected, incidences being lower than 2%. In Victoria (Sward & Lister, 1987), as in the south coastal region of Western Australia (Jones et ai., 1990), levels of infection were higher. Sward & Lister (1987) detected BYDV in ten of the 26 crops sampled.…”

“…After 3 to 4 weeks growth, sap extracts were prepared from 0 .5 g samples of the youngest fully expanded leaves and assayed for virus content using ELISA . The double antibody sandwich ELISA technique for detecting BYDV has been described previously (Sward & Lister, 1987 ;Xin et al ., 1988) . Immuno-…”
