Beginning with the 20th century metal structures are widely used in the construction branch in Russia. The reason for it was in the development of calculation methods of structures. Beginning with 1930 and till now a substantial number of the industrial buildings (about 90 %) of production plants have been built of metal structures. The essential part of them - 20…60 % of the whole volume - has block coverings consisting of bearing and braced elements. At the present time the data on the operation duration of industrial structures is not systemized throughout Russia. This data may serve as one of characteristic factors for estimating safety operation level, because while the operation term increases, the wear also increases (mechanical damages), which influences the bearing capacity of the structures. The following article examines the collapse of industrial building coverings that may be accompanied not only by material losses, but also by fatal accidents. Statistical data of damageability of trusses and their elements are presented; the consequences of collapse are examined. The average life time of trusses is determined which is serving as a criteria that characterizes damage accumulation. The nature of the collapse of block coverings is revealed which, in most cases, may be classified as progressive.

This document is intended to provide owners and practicing engineers with current "best practices" to reduce the likelihood of progressive collapse of buildings in the event of abnormal loading. The report includes a discussion of an acceptable risk approach to progressive collapse, which involves defining the threat, event control, and structural design to resist postulated event. Practical means for reducing risk for new and existing buildings are presented. An extensive review is provided of the design methods used to enhance a buildings resistance to progressive collapse. These include the indirect method (providing sufficient tie forces), the specific local resistance method (designing key elements to withstand abnormal loads), and the alternate load path method (allowing for redistribution of load in the event of the loss of a key member). Design considerations for different structural materials are summarized. The methodology for evaluating and mitigating progressive collapse potential in existing buildings is also discussed. Three appendices provide supporting information. Appendix A presents a worldwide review of progressive collapse provisions in various national design standards. Appendix B identifies knowledge gaps related to progressive collapse that require research. Appendix C provides case studies of progressive collapses. This document is not intended to provide step-by-step design guidance for practicing engineers; however, applicable design standards are referenced and summarized in Appendix A.

Abstract-The process of dynamic response for the pre-load steel frame subjected to impulsive load is a complicated nonlinear problem. In this paper, the ABAQUS nonlinear finite element analysis software is used to simulate the dynamic response of the pre-load steel frame subjected to transverse impact loading. The parametric study shows that: the increasing of impact kinetic energy and impact location will increase the dynamic response of the steel frame; the dynamic response is primarily dependent on the level of impact kinetic energy; at the same impact kinetic energy, a smaller impacting velocity with a higher mass tends to give more severe dynamic response of the pre-load steel frame.
