The Incidence of abnormal loading in residential buildings

Abstract: The findings of an analysis of available U.S. statistics concerning the incidence of abnormal loading events in residential buildings are presented. The study evaluates natural gas explosions, bomb explosions, motor vehicle collision, sonic boom, aircraft collision, and explosion of hazardous materials. It is concluded that the gas-related explosion, bomb explosion, and vehicular collision are of significance in building design for progressive collapse. Of these, the natural gas explosion is the most significa… Show more

“…Согласно [18] лавинообразное или прогрессирующее обрушение -это распространение начального локального повреждения в виде цепной реакции от элемента к элементу, которое в конечном счете приводит к обрушению всего сооружения или непропорционально большой его части. Согласно [19,20] В [23] приведен анализ причин лавинообразных обрушений с оценкой величины материальных ущербов. Также рассматривается широкий спектр аварийных нагрузок, которые могут привести к обрушению.…”

“…An early study of the incidences of gas explosions in dwellings (Leyendecker and Burnett 1976) indicated that the mean rate of occurrence of gas explosions in dwellings was approximately 1.8 × 10 -5 /yr. This number since has been confirmed in two (unpublished) studies in the U.S. and the U.K., where the mean occurrence rates were found to be 2.3 × 10 -5 /yr and 1.86 × 10 -5 /yr, respectively.…”

“…Vehicular collisions with buildings occur mainly in urban areas due to single vehicles leaving the roadway. One early study (Leyendecker and Burnett, 1976) suggested that the annual frequency of impact of motor vehicles with buildings was approximately 6 x 10 -4 per dwelling unit per yr. More recent data describing the incidence of such collisions nationwide could not be located. Forces due to vehicular collision (involving trains and barges, as well as trucks) may be obtained from an analysis that relates the energy absorbed by the vehicle and the structure itself during the collision.…”

“…However, these structures are threatened by abnormal loads due to accidents, faulty practice, terrorist attacks, etc. As early as 40 years ago, Leyendecker et al [1,2] indicated the probability of occurrence of abnormal loads, and the building destroyed by abnormal loads due to accidents had happened many times. Especially in the "9.11" terrorist attacks, engineers realized the importance of structural resistance to abnormal loads and had put more efforts to the impact resistance of structures.…”
