The in vitro and in vivo experimental evidences disclose the chemopreventive effects of Ganoderma lucidum on cancer invasion and metastasis

Abstract: The Ganoderma lucidum (Leyss. ex Fr.) Karst, an edible mushroom, has been utilized for centuries in East Asia to prevent or treat various diseases and to reduce the likelihood of cancer invasion and metastasis. The primary bioactive compounds are commonly considered to be polysaccharides and triterpenoids. Evidence that G. lucidum extract and its bioactive compounds may have a potential inhibitory effect on cancer invasion and metastasis is increasingly being reported in the scientific literature. “…It is well known that cancer cells are of high invasion and migration ability leading to metastasis that proceeds through a complex multistep process involving cell adhesion, proteolysis degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM), angiogenesis and invasion (34). Thus, several studies and development of new anticancer drugs are revolving around anti-metastasis research (35).…”

“…Therefore, chemotherapy is suggested to prevent local recurrence of the primary tumor and the spread of tumor cells (Weng & Yen, 2010). However, commercially available synthetic chemotherapeutic agents have severe side effects.…”

“…Tumor growth and metastasis is angiogenesis dependent. Several lines of direct evidence have shown that angiogenesis is essential for tumor growth and metastasis (Weng & Yen, 2010). The ex vivo check chorioallatonic membrane (CAM) assay is commonly employed to examine the anti-angiogenic activity of samples.…”

“…Matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) are a family of zinc-dependent extracellular endopeptidase enzymes that play a vital role in the proteolysis of structural and signaling components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and influence cell differentiation, migration, invasion, and proliferations of cells (Weng and Yen, 2010). Since HCC tumors develop in fibrotic livers, MMP activity is particularly necessary for growth, invasion and metastasis.…”
