The importance of widespread testing for COVID-19 pandemic: systems thinking for drive-through testing sites

Abstract: On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Early epidemiological estimates show that COVID-19 is highly transmissible, infecting populations across the globe in a short amount of time. WHO has recommended widespread clinical testing in order to contain COVID-19. However, mass testing in emergency department (ED) settings may result in crowded EDs and increase transmission risk for healthcare staff and other ED patients. “…Since future pandemics may, unfortunately, emerge 38 , it is fundamental to keep developing alternative monitoring strategies. The shortcomings of methods that rely on self-reporting should be kept in mind also in analyzing results from the various self-reporting apps [39][40][41] , and underscore the crucial role of independent epidemiological tools, such as sewage monitoring 42,43 and widespread laboratory testing 33,44,45 .…”

“…Besides, there are challenges of social distancing in common areas, which are also highlighted by and Fadel et al (2020). Araz et al (2020) highlight that the dispersal of COVID-19 is leading to the breakdown of numerous global supply chains. Likewise, Linton and Vakil (2020) highlight supply chainrelated challenges in approximately 1,000 global organizations.…”

“…A central metric to understanding diseases and other factors relating to health is testing. Crucially then, to adequately monitor the incidence, distribution, and control of COVID-19 depends on how many people are tested and other governmental policy responses ( Araz et al, 2020 ). South Korea, Italy, the U.K., and the USA all reported their first cases of COVID-19 infections in late January.…”
