The importance of visual function in the quality of life of children with uveitis

Abstract: Background-Studies of quality of life (QOL) in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) have focused on changes in musculoskeletal function secondary to arthritis. The role of visual functionality as a result of JIA-associated uveitis and its complications has not been examined. We evaluated the individual impact of physical and visual disability on QOL in children with and without uveitis.

“…The Effects of Youngsters’ Eyesight on Quality of Life (EYE-Q)83 84 is interchangeably referred to as a measure of visual function and QoL. Tables 2 and 3 provide details of the comparison of intended and achieved measured constructs and/or domains targeted by these instruments.…”

“…Nevertheless, we found that some investigators appear to assume that vision- or eye condition-related QoL involves measurement of the restriction in eye or vision function. Thus, certain measures apparently assessing vision- or eye condition-specific QoL in fact comprise scales assessing symptoms or functional ability associated with those conditions (eg, QUICK43 and EYE_Q83 84). …”

“…The clinical ocular exam (i.e. slit lamp exam or visual acuity), and other validated subjected measures such as the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) to measure overall QOL, or the Effects of Youngsters’ Eyesight on Quality of Life (EYE-Q) to measure visual function and vision related QOL could be considered but may be difficult to implement in such a large cohort since they are time consuming to administer 48,49 .…”

“…However, an assessment tool to measure vision-related quality of life in children was developed only recently, in 2010. The Effects of Youngsters' Eyesight on Quality of Life (EYE-Q) 36 questionnaire was initially validated in a population of 120 children aged 8-18 years with JIA-associated uveitis, of whom 46.7% had no visual impairment and 52% had bilateral eye involvement. 37 At this stage, however, further validation and adaptation for different countries is required before this uveitis-related quality of life tool can be widely adopted.…”
