The use of reflective practice can be beneficial particularly when there is added complexity in the client's clinical presentation. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview o… Show more

“…For some ASR, talk-therapies can cause reliving rather than resolving past experiences, which can be harmful without experienced trauma-informed support [ 53 , 64 ]. Reflective practice, to help manage dissociative symptoms through identifying triggers and practicing grounding techniques, shows some promise for ASR clients [ 72 ]. Other suggestions included sleep therapies or activity-based therapies for those with trauma symptoms [ 71 ].…”

“…The importance of using reflective practice when working with refugees, asylum seekers and survivors of torture within IAPT (Brooks, 2019) In this article, Michelle Brooks emphasizes the need for the reflective practice, self-practice and critical incident analysis model when working with service users with complex needs, such as refugees, asylum seekers and survivors of torture attending the IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) programme. Brooks identifies some of the challenges that refugees, asylum seekers and survivors of torture may present with.…”

“…Worldwide, there are currently 89.3 million people forcibly displaced, which is a direct result of conflict, persecution, violence, and human rights violations (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, 2021). The lived experiences of refugees are unique because they have an increased risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety due to the traumatic events they experience before, during, and after exile, which often include stressors adjusting to a new country and acculturation stress (Brooks, 2019; Schweitzer et al, 2007; Ventriglio et al, 2017). Some of these stressors and traumatic experiences refugees face include separation from family members, malnutrition, food insecurity, lack of shelter, infectious diseases, and exposure to environmental toxins (Grasser, 2022; Gushulak & MacPherson, 2006; Polonsky et al, 2013).…”
