The importance of shading by riparian vegetation and wetlands in fish survival in stagnant water holes, Great Ruaha River, Tanzania

Abstract: Mass fish mortality occurred in November 2006 in a water hole in the Great Ruaha River, Ruaha National Park, and was due to the lack of shade by riparian vegetation or fringing wetlands. Nearby water holes with shade or fringing wetlands suffered no fish mortality. Despite being vulnerable to intense birds' predation, fish stayed in the top few centimeters due to hypoxia in deeper water.
