The importance of real-life research in respiratory medicine: manifesto of the Respiratory Effectiveness Group

Abstract: @ERSpublicationsThe Respiratory Effectiveness Group states that high-quality real-life research is required to complement traditional RCTs and should be considered to guide treatment-related decisions. Specific tools should be used for quality assessment.

“…By improving external validity and establishment in usual care, reallife studies such as the present one are useful to complement the results of traditional randomized controlled trial. 48 In conclusion, the present retrospective study demonstrated that, although being older than 70 years is associated with reduced exercise tolerance and functional capacity and higher prevalence of comorbidities and longterm oxygen therapy use, this does not prevent people with Figure 2 Changes in exercise tolerance, functional capacity, quality of life, anxiety, and depression according to age group. Mean percentage of changes in HAD total score, depression and anxiety subscores, VSRQ, 6MST and TUG at M2, M8, and M14 (2, 6, and 12 months after the PR) for participants ≤ 70 year (closed square) and > 70 years (closed triangle).…”

“…However, although medications are globalized, as are most guidelines, the patient journey remains diverse between and sometimes even within geographical areas. In a world of international standards, a major challenge will be to develop care pathways accommodating knowledge of treatment efficacy and risk management within the framework of a particular health system and available resources (12). In this respect, technology, increasingly appearing as e-health and m-health, will certainly need to be harnessed (13).…”
