“…This disparity would likely be largely due to differences between different population stocks in addition to differences in the specifics of diagnostic criteria for such a NAFLD. This is one of the possible reasons that the prevalence of NAFLD in this elderly agricultural and fishing population (27.2%) was lower than the corresponding figure presented in a previous occupational population-based study conducted in Chinese populations [4,9,12]. Our study demonstrated NAFLD to be a disease of elderly age group with a mean age at presentation being 67 years.…”

“…Although NAFLD has been demonstrated to be present in several occupational populations and has been shown to be responsible for more than one third of patients with asymptomatic disorder, little is known about the baseline clinical and biochemical profiles of elderly sub-population [4,9,12]. The prevalence of a NAFLD amongst different screened populations appears to vary according to the results of different studies conducted in different countries [13][14][15].…”

“…The majority of subjects were light to moderate alcohol drinkers, and the average daily alcohol consumption even in the excessive drinkers was less than 60 g/d in the present study. This might be related to the different alcohol drinking culture backgrounds worldwide and the universal concern about the overall health among Shanghai adults [16,18,21] . The low prevalence of current alcohol drinking is consequently consistent with the uncommon alcoholic fatty liver (0.79%).…”

“…4,[72][73][74] Similarly, only 15% of Chinese patients with NAFLD have diabetes at presentation. 20 Diabetes was seen in only 4.2% and 4.8% of males and 5.8% and11.6% of females with steatosis and NASH, respectively, in Korea. 75 This is in contrast to the Western studies where the prevalence of diabetes was 30-60% in patients with NAFLD.…”

“…18 Similar high prevalence of NAFLD in obese population has been shown in Asia, ranging from 50% to 80% in Japan, 70% to 80% in China, 10% to 50% in Korea, and 47% in Indonesia. 2,[19][20][21] One study from Taiwan in morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery found the prevalence of NASH to be as high as 80%. 22 …”
