Missi Merlino, MHA, RN-BC, CNOR, CSSM H ow many times have we heard the phrase "nurses eat their young?" I believe it is time that we change that phrase to nurses nurture their young. My theme this year, 20/20 Vision: Creating Our Future, is about creating the best future for perioperative nursing. The best way to ensure the continued excellence of perioperative nursing practice is through embracing inclusion and nurturing new nurses.Perioperative nursing is a complex specialty that has little to no coverage in many nursing schools' curricula. Entering the OR for the first time can be overwhelming; I know it was for me. There was a new language, I had difficulty understanding what others were saying because of the masks covering their mouths, staff members seemed preoccupied with readying the room without involving me or explaining what they were doing, I did not know what "mood" the surgeon would be in each day, and the list went on. Even though I had been a nurse for several years, some staff members made me feel like I did not know anything. Then there were those special nurses who were willing to take me under their wing until I was ready to soar on my own, and for that I am eternally grateful.
