The importance of gestational diabetes beyond pregnancy

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is the main health problem affecting Mexico's population. The mechanisms by which susceptibility to it is acquired and diabetes develops are topics of ongoing research. “…Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the common cause of hyperglycaemia in pregnancy, accounting for about 90% of all diabetes during pregnancy . Usually, GDM resolves after the baby is born , nevertheless, it makes a woman prone to GDM in later pregnancies, and is associated with long‐term health risks to the mother as well as the child, such as predisposition to obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes later in life .
