The importance of food systems and the environment for nutrition

Abstract: Global and local food system transformation is necessary in order to ensure the delivery of healthy, safe, and nutritious foods in both sustainable and equitable ways. Food systems are complex entities that affect diets, human health, and a range of other outcomes including economic growth, natural resource and environmental resiliency, and sociocultural factors. However, food systems contribute to and are vulnerable to ongoing climate and environmental changes that threaten their sustainability. Although ther… Show more

“…Factors like declining traditional knowledge, opportunity cost in access, displacement of traditional crop species by a few major crops and shifting diets and food cultures have substantially influenced their food systems (16) and led to underutilization of many diverse indigenous food resources (17,18). Nonetheless, several factors have been documented in the scientific literature to promote these food systems such as local accessibility, cost effectiveness, existence of traditional knowledge, sustainable utilization of the natural environment from farming or wild harvesting and socioecological resilience (19)(20)(21)(22).…”

“…Ideally, food policy changes in times of climate disruption need to be informed by evidence concerning both proximal (e.g., dietary) and distal (e.g., health/environmental) outcomes of food systems ( 23 ). In this diet-modeling study, we thus aimed to develop 4 hypothetical consumption pathways to reach the United Kingdom's 5-a-day target for fruit and vegetable intake on a national scale.…”

“…Several aspects related to AFB 1 and CC need more attention, based on our literature review; nevertheless, interesting statements can be captured, which can be summarized using the following keywords: chain and multi-actor approach, intersectoral and multidisci-plinary, resilience, human and animal health, global vision. To further summarize, the food system should be considered as a whole [253], taking advantage of smart agriculture [23]. We can learn from each other, both from different steps in the chain and from different geographic areas.…”
