The importance of establishing a core outcome set for endodontic clinical trials and outcomes studies

Abstract: Endodontic therapy aims to preserve teeth by preventing and treating apical disease, therefore, evaluation of treatment outcome in clinical trials and outcomes studies should effectively assess if it achieves these aims. Traditionally, treatment outcomes have been reported by clinicians after history and clinical examination in what is known as clinician-reported outcomes (CROs). Much less commonly employed however, are patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in which patients directly report on their condition. Endo… Show more

“…The study was conducted in a private practice and patients were referred from general dental practices to reflect the regular work of an endodontist. The most current methodological recommendations were taken into consideration to make the results comparable with similar studies (Azarpazhooh, Khazaei, et al., 2022; Azarpazhooh, Sgro, et al., 2022; El‐Karim et al., 2023; Kirkevang et al., 2022; Nagendrababu et al., 2023). The pre‐operative prognostic factors of lesion diameter and PAI index were used, the latter with a five score PAI system for better prognostic value (Kirkevang et al., 2015).…”

“…Determining a Core Outcome Set (COS), that is, ‘an agreed standardised set of outcomes that should be measured and reported, as a minimum, in all clinical trials in specific areas of health or health care’ is recommended (COMET initiative, 2023). Several projects are in the making to propose COSs within dental research, including endodontics (Duncan et al., 2021; El‐Karim et al., 2023; Levey et al., 2017; Watson et al., 2020). Hopefully, such recommendations can also serve as a help and reminder for researchers to evaluate outcomes related to patients or society when possible.…”

“…An a priori protocol for the COSET project was published and registered in COMET (https://comet-initiative.org/Studies/Details/1879) (El Karim et al., 2021, 2022, 2023). This report is prepared according to the Core Outcome Set–STAndards for Reporting (COS‐STAR) Statement (Kirkham et al., 2016).…”
