“…The dietary intake during the stay in hospital has been shown to be far below the estimated requirement and often less than the intake at home (Weinsier et al, 1979;Sandstrom et al, 1985;Waage et al, 1987;Larsson et al, 1994) Studies have shown that nutritional intervention can improve nutrition status (McWhirter and Pennington, 1994) and clinical outcome (Delmi et al, 1990;Breslow et al, 1993). In the study by Breslow et al it was the quality of the nutritional support that was of signi®cance.…”

“…Some studies (n 19) provided 'recommendations' to patients about when to consume the ONS, although it appeared that patient compliance with this timing was not checked. Suggested times varied considerably, and included between meals (Lipschitz et al 1985;Woo et al 1994;Volkert et al 1996), with meals (Breslow et al 1993), early in the morning (Cederholm & Hellstrom, 1995), during the afternoon (Sondel et al 1987) or in the evening (Fiatarone et al 1994), with the aim to maximally increase total energy intake. Conclusions about the best time and frequency of ONS consumption in different disease groups could not be reached from the studies reviewed, in particular due to a lack of formal comparisons of these different schedules.…”

“…It also causes a decrease in muscle mass and strength, leading to gait disorders, falls and fractures (10). Low albuminemia is associated with the development of pressure sores and with poor healing (11). Thus, malnutrition may increase morbidity, leading to a life-threatening vicious circle of disease and malnutrition.…”
