The Importance of Assessing Nutritional Status in Elderly Patients with Heart Failure

Abstract: Heart failure (HF) is a syndrome characterized by high morbidity and mortality, despite advances in medical and device therapy that have significantly improved survival. The outcome of HF in elderly patients results from a combination of biological, functional, psychological, and environmental factors, one of which is nutritional status. Malnutrition, as well as HF, is frequently present with aging. Early detection might lead to earlier intervention. It is our goal to review the importance of nutritional statu… Show more

“…In the present study, the CONUT score was a useful predictor of cardiac events within 1 year after discharge in older HF patients. There is no universally accepted definition of malnutrition or a gold‐standard methodology for nutritional assessment because the interactions among age, left ventricle systolic function and clinical setting influence the evaluation of nutritional status . However, the present results showing that malnutrition assessed by CONUT score was associated with cardiac events in older patients suggest that assessment of nutritional status by CONUT score at admission might lead to earlier intervention, thus contributing to improvement in the prognosis of older HF patients.…”

“…The mechanisms by which proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF-, produced by monocytes are increased in CHF patients remain unclear. However, the production of monocyte TNF-may be enhanced by various stimuli, such as angiotensin II, CRP, and endotoxin (LPS: lipopolysaccharide) and proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF-itself [1][2][3][19][20][21] . HR: hazard ratio, C.I.…”

“…Malnutrition has been identified to be an independent risk factor of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) 1,2) . Nutritional intervention may prevent complications and increase the quality of life in CHF patients 3,4) .…”

“…Malnutrition has been recognized as an independent risk factor for morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) 5, 6 . Some single nutritional indices such as albumin have been shown to be closely associated with poor outcomes in patients with CHF 7, 8 .…”
