The importance and management strategies of cereal cyst nematodes, Heterodera spp., in Turkey

Abstract: Cereal cyst nematodes (CCNs) can cause significant economic yield losses alone or in combination with other biotic and abiotic factors. The damage caused by these nematodes can be enormous when they occur in a disease complex, particularly in areas subject to water stress. Of the 12 valid CCN species, Heterodera avenae, H. filipjevi, and H. latipons are considered the most economically important in different parts of the world. This paper reviews current approaches to managing CCNs via genetic resistance, biol… Show more

“…Nevertheless, accurate identification of members of the H. avenae group is needed as an initial step in designing effective control measures. This is especially important when searching for potential sources of host-plant resistance against Heterodera species (Dababat et al 2015). Furthermore, rapid and accurate identification is highly significant for quarantine purposes.…”

“…Three species of cereal cyst nematodes (CCN), Heterodera avenae, H. filipjevi and H. latipons, are considered the most economically important in global wheat production systems. The cereal cyst nematodes status, economic importance and managments have been reviewed by Dababat et al (2014). Significant economic losses have been reported from different continents (Nicol & Rivoal 2008, Sahin et al 2009).…”

“…However, the dominant species varied with the region. Heterodera avenae and H. latipons were found in the south-eastern and eastern Mediterranean region, while H. filipjevi was prevalent in the central Anatolian region (Öztürk et al 1998, Abidou et al 2005, Yavuzaslanoglu et al 2012, Imren et al 2012, Dababat et al 2014. Heterodera avenae, H. filipjevi and H. latipons were found in Syria (Rivoal et al 2003, Abidou et al 2005, Hassan et al 2010.…”
