The Implementation of Early Detection in Tuberculosis Contact Investigation to Improve Case Finding

Abstract: The early detection of Tuberculosis (TB) among TB contacts is a strategy to find TB cases in earlier stage and to stop the transmission. This study aimed to assess the implementation of early detection in TB contact investigation to improve TB case finding. This was an operational research study conducted in Badung District, Bali, Indonesia. The samples were TB contacts, identified in the period July through September (third quarter) 2017. Contacts were household members who were living and sharing a room at l… Show more

“…Early detection means a systematic screening and examination to diagnose TB at an earlier stage. Screening using chest X-ray was done for adult contacts without cough to find out if there were any abnormalities in the lung parenchymal that is suggestive of TB, and tuberculin skin test was conducted on all children contacts (Putra et al, 2019).…”

“…The sample size was determined to test the difference of a two-population proportion (one-sided test). The complete participation proportion reported from the pilot study (8.2%) was used as a baseline proportion (Putra et al, 2019). Estimated precision of 5%, 2.5 design effect, 0.03 interclass correlation coefficient, 12 cluster size, and 80% power were considered for total sample size estimation.…”

“…9-17 Challenges which often occur with active case finding are including the lack of frequency of home visits, inadequate resources, inaccurate diagnostic tools, low participation of contacts during visits due to lack of TB knowledge, fear and stigma in society. 18,19 To date, there is no previous studies involving TB patients as volunteers for active case finding in Indonesia, while some studies were conducted outside Indonesia, which may not necessarily suitable for Indonesian conditions. Additionally, low awareness about TB, fear and shame due to stigma may become several considerations of the increase need to engage TB patients as volunteers to improve active case findings.…”
