The Impacts of Calamity Logging on the Development of Spruce Wood Prices in Czech Forestry

Abstract: Currently, the decline in spruce wood prices is a serious problem for the forestry sector in the Czech Republic. We estimate that the fall in wood prices in European markets causes losses not only to the forestry companies producing, harvesting, and processing the wood, but also to the workers in the sector. These losses are mainly caused by a combination of several natural factors: drought, climate change, and the effects of bark beetles. In particular, spruce bark beetles cause the greatest damage. “…Among many factors, the wood raw material market is influenced by the availability of raw material, assortment, wood harvesting technology, and the situation on the forest services market [13][14][15][16][17]. Another group of factors is forest policy, nature protection or natural disasters [18][19][20][21]. Many studies were undertaken to combine the analyzed factors into coherent forecasts for the development of the wood market [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29] however, local markets have their own specificity and do not always reflect trends in a broader perspective [30] Wood raw material prices in Poland generally are close to the average prices in Europe, but the precious wood market has its own specificity.…”

“…In the secondary spruce stands, the original number of trees ranging from 476 to 484 tress•ha -1 decreased slightly during the monitored period. Spruce stands throughout Europe are currently at great risk from ongoing climate change, especially rising temperatures and summer drought (Zang et al 2014;Cukor et al 2019;Vacek et al 2019bVacek et al , 2020 that lead to bark beetle outbreaks (Krejčí et al 2013;Putalová et al 2019;Toth et al 2020). In addition, the stand volume increased by 41% in 20 years.…”

“…Great attention will have to be paid to pre-school education so that talents from socially weaker backgrounds can be captured in time and they will be able to develop their talent and become a qualified required workforce. According to Křečková et al (2016) and Toth et al (2020) education will change significantly, new approaches and forms will be necessary and will be significantly more challenging for teachers. It is known that teachers do not have the required skills to be able to develop their students' digital skills in particular.…”
