PurposeThis research explored how COVID-19 affects Shenzhen high school students' reading behavior and preference and their parents' attitudes toward reading during the lockdown.Design/methodology/approachThis research adopted a qualitative approach to conduct one-on-one semi-structured interviews with parents of a boarding high school in Shenzhen, China. Thirteen parents were recruited through a purposeful sampling method, and NVivo12 software was used to analyze the results with a theme-based approach guided by the 5E instructional model.FindingsThe results revealed the effectiveness and problems of high school students' use of electronic resources and discovered changes in the reading behavior of high school students and their parents' attitudes during COVID-19.Originality/valueThere are few studies specifically on the reading behavior of boarding students from a parental view, especially in Asia. This research can fill the gaps in related research during COVID-19.

Psychology is one of the numerous factors that influences students’ mathematics achievement, but studies on the influence of psychology on student mathematics achievement are still limited. This study analyzes key factors affecting mathematics achievement through teacher-parent support, stress, and students’ well-being in learning mathematics. Data was collected via online questionnaires. Participants of the study are 531 students studying at five secondary schools in Bandung, Indonesia. The data were analyzed using the structural equations modeling approach using SMART-PLS 3.0 software. The results showed that interest in learning was the most significant factor affecting students’ mathematics achievement. Moreover, teachers have a more substantial effect than parents’ support, which does not significantly reduce the students’ stress levels. The academic and emotional support of teachers and parents reduces students’ stress levels while increasing their feelings and interest in learning mathematics. This study provides essential results for school teachers and parents to improve students’ mathematics achievement at the secondary school level.

Teaching methods are a complex topic in mathematics education. This study aims to analyze the teaching methods of previous relevant studies and design a new lesson study on how to teach the topic of functions at the high school level in China. Lesson study focuses on the basic concepts of function and problem-solving abilities. The researcher uses the research and development method to teach the material function at the high school level. This Lesson Study is used to teach in China. The researcher explains 4 important aspects in designing a lesson study, namely the introduction or opening section, the instructional section or core section, the assessment section, and the closing section.
