“…As expected, the eligibility of donor corneas for transplantation was strongly dependent on their ECD at the time of explantation (Table 2) and was associated with donor age. Several clinical and experimental studies have shown that the average ECD reduces annually between 0.3% and 0.6%, with a concomitant increase in polymegathism and pleomorphism because of age-related changes in the cornea (Blatt et al 1979;Carlson et al 1988;Bourne et al 1997;Rao et al 2000;Hashemian et al 2006;Yunliang et al 2007;Laule et al 1978;Culbertson et al 1982;Yee et al 1985;Mattern et al 1995;Probst et al 1997;Gavrilov et al 2010). A higher proportion of postcataract-surgery eyes with inherent lower cell count because of subclinical surgical damage of the endothelium (Probst et al 1997) might add to the lower ECD in mature donors.…”

“…In hypothermic storage specular microscopic control is now used by more than 60% of the eye banks in the USA26 and in Europe (Directory European Eye Bank Association, 1997). Routine specular microscopy can play an important role in setting higher, more uniform quality standards for tissue acceptance during hypothermic storage 27. In addition, its use for tissue from donors above the age of 70 can assess corneas that may otherwise be arbitrarily excluded for transplantation on the basis of age and postmortem time.…”
