The Impact of Type of Examples on Originality: Explaining Fixation and Stimulation Effects

Abstract: There are obstacles to creativity: one of them is called fixation effect, the fact that some knowledge about existing or obvious solutions is spontaneously activated and constrains the generation of new solutions. Converging evidence in cognitive psychology has indicated that the ability to generate original ideas can be limited by recently activated knowledge, such as examples of solutions. On the other hand, neuroimaging studies have recently demonstrated that exposure to examples could, on the contrary, hav… Show more

“…Second, for both the engineers and industrial designers, the introduction of an uncreative example reinforced the fixation effect and constrained both their fluency and their expansivity. Thus, our results are consistent with those of Agogué et al (2013), which showed that an uncreative example that was chosen within the fixation effect constrains the creative capabilities of individuals. Of particular interest in the present study is that the industrial designers who were exposed to a restrictive example behaved similarly to the engineers in the control group.…”

“…Inter-rater agreement was excellent (percent agreement = 97%). Based on a previous study (Agogué et al, 2013;, three meta-categories (i.e., dampening the shock, protecting the egg, and slowing the fall) met the qualifications for the fixation effect, whereas the seven others did not (e.g., using a living device and modifying the natural properties of the egg). We then counted the number of solutions that were outside the fixation effect for each participant.…”

“…Based on the research results on design theory, they were able to invent new organizations, new methods and new processes (see also (Agogué and Kazakçi 2014;Hatchuel et al 2015;Defour et al 2010;Meijer et al 2015;Reich and Subrahmanian 2015). This led them to get impressive industrial results -one illustration is given by the fact that some of them got also prizes like the RedDot award for their innovative products (Figure 4).…”

“…For example, research has considered how the semantic relevance [8,9,13], novelty [9,1], and diversity [15,51,5,45] of examples influence ideation. However, one important question has received less attention: when should innovators look at examples?…”
