The Impact of Type-D Personality on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life in Cleft Lip and Palate Adolescents

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the oral health-related quality of life and type-D personality in cleft lip/palate (CLP) patients and the relationship between type-D personality and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in CLP patients. Fifty patients with CLP within age range from 8 to 15 years were chosen and asked to complete both Child Oral Health Impact Profile (COHI) and Type-D scale (DS14) questionnaire. “…In clinical practice, we have also found that many parents of patients with CL/P pay too much attention to the improvement of their children's appearance and function while ignoring their children's performance in interpersonal communication, personality development and school achievement and attribute the patients' inadaptability in these aspects only to different personalities and characteristics. Previous studies have also found similar problems ( 72 74 ). In summary, although the burden of life care and medical care for parents is reduced as patients with CL/P grow up, we should still remind parents and provide parents with relevant professional services to promote the healthy growth of patients' psychology and society.…”

“…Treating children with dental malformations in a multidisciplinary manner and referring them to the appropriate doctors is crucial. Cleft lip and/or cleft palate malformations often cause speech and hearing impairments, which may be a hindrance to effective communication [ 12 , 13 ]. Children with cleft palate, who often have severe speech impairments and other learning problems, require regular monitoring and intensive treatment not just for cleft-related disorders but also for the potential for other developmental issues, such as social and emotional difficulties.…”

“…Extroversion has been associated in the literature with higher levels of health and quality of life and shown to have negative correlations with depression, anxiety, and negative affect; extroverted people have higher levels of emotional, psychological, and social well-being (Tian et al, 2019). In one study of adolescents with a cleft, Ajami et al (2018) reported no greater prevalence of social inhibition; however, De Oliveira et al (2015) reported more social inhibition. With regard to the lower scores in conscientiousness found in our study in children and adolescents with CL/P, overprotection by parents in response to perceived deficits in social, cognitive, and emotional aspects, as noted by Pinquart & Pfeiffer (2011) could be hypothesized as possible triggers.…”
