The Impact of Time on Nutrition and Health Claims on the Irish Marketplace

Abstract: Since the implementation of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims (NHCR) made on food, only 261 health claims have been authorised, suggesting that the regulation creates challenges for the food industry. This study looks at the prevalence of nutrition and health claims labelled on food on the Irish market. Specifically, we compared their prevalence in 2009 with those present on the marketplace in 2022. Food labels of defined food categories were examined in three nationwide supermarkets … Show more

“…As many as 31.8% of breads presented fibre-related NCs in this study, which is similar to the results in pre-packed bread in Lebanon (29.3%) [ 9 ]. An Irish study showed practically identical prevalence (30.3%), though bakery products were included along with bread [ 11 ].…”

“…Fibre and its benefits are frequently used to draw consumers’ attention to foods, for example, by using nutrition and health claims (NHCs) [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Many works have shown that NHCs may increase the perceived nutritional quality and healthiness of foods as well as influence purchasing behavior [ 15 , 16 ].…”

“…Over the last decade, research has shown that HCs are present on between 10.5 and 25% of foods [13][14][15][16][17]. Kaur et al (2016) [15] evaluated randomly selected foods across five European countries and, of the sample foods, 11% carried an HC.…”

“…Kaur et al (2016) [15] evaluated randomly selected foods across five European countries and, of the sample foods, 11% carried an HC. Offe et al (2022) [17] assessed the prevalence of HCs on labelled foods available in Ireland and found that the use of HCs decreased from 21.6% in 2009 to 10.5% in 2021. The study revisited earlier data also collected in Ireland by Lalor et al (2009) [18] and compared HCs on similar products.…”

“…However, today, nutrient content claims are mainly used on product labels and dairy yoghurts (O'Mahony et al , 2020; Wadhwa et al , 2021). There has been a remarkable evolution in the type of claim used in food labelling: moving predominantly from health claims to mainly nutrition claims (Offe et al , 2022). Thirty years have passed since health claims first appeared on dairy products and in the intervening time, much has changed.…”
