The Impact of the Quality of Laboratory Staff on the Accuracy of Laboratory Results

Abstract: This study tests the premise that laboratories employing medical technologists certified by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (MT[ASCP]) produce more accurate laboratory test results, as measured by the College of American Pathologists proficiency tests. Licensed laboratories in Illinois provided the sample. An accuracy score on the College of American Pathologists proficiency tests was calculated for each laboratory. The accuracy score of a subgroup of laboratories employi… Show more

“…Several early studies demonstrated that the accuracy and precision of laboratory results obtained by medical technologists certified by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, Chicago, 111, exceeded those obtained by medical technologists who were not certified or by nonlaboratory-based operators. 31,32 To our knowledge these observations have not impeded the development of point-of-care testing programs in which the analytical determinations are largely performed by nurses. At our institution, training and certification of nurses in such bedside testing programs is a responsibility of the staff of the clinical laboratory.…”
