The impact of the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme on US aviation

Abstract: We estimate the economic impacts on US airlines that may arise from the inclusion of aviation in the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS) for the years 2012 to 2020. We find that the EU-ETS would only have a small impact on US aviation traffic and emissions, and that aviation operations

“…While there is a wide body of literature that deals with CO 2 abatement in the airline industry through market-based measures (e.g., Hofer et al, 2010;Malina et al, 2012, Winchester et al, 2013b, only a small amount of archival studies, as discussed below, have been published that quantify the environmental and economic impact of large-scale aviation biofuel adoption. Moreover, none of the existing papers on aviation biofuels examine the impact of advanced biofuels on aviation emissions and economic activity.…”

“…Here the research question investigated, the model used, specific assumptions on the costpass-through rate and the allowance prices differ. While Derigs and Illing (2013) focus on the impact of the EU ETS on cargo airlines under 5 different scenarios for the EU ETS in the year 2020, Malina et al (2012) investigate the cost and CO 2 impact of the EU ETS on the US aviation industry in the timeframe 2012À2020. Scheelhaase et al (2012) analyze the cost and environmental impact of the EU ETS on all airlines under the trading Because of these methodological and other differences, the results of these recent studies are not entirely comparable, too.…”

“…The economic literature has thoroughly investigated the effects of the EU-ETS on economic performance and competitiveness, and innovation (see Ellerman et al (2015); Martin et al (2015)). Focusing on the aviation sector, some authors have found that the EU-ETS generates a reduction of profit margins (Malina et al, 2012;Girardet and Spinler, 2013), a loss of market shares, or a reduction of companies' growth rates (Faber and Brinke, 2011;Anger and Köhler, 2010), and a change in barriers to entry (Barbot et al, 2014). These effects may be even more important when airlines cannot off-set environmental costs by passing through additional costs onto air fares or by using profits gained on extra-European routes 2 .…”
