The impact of temporary employment on productivity

Abstract: Recent papers in the economic literature emphasise that the use of temporary contracts (TE) could have a detrimental effect on productivity. However, there are different reasons to believe that the impact of TE might not be homogeneous across sectors. In this article, we study the impact of TE on productivity growth and, in particular, we wonder if it differs according to sectors' skill intensity. Our data set is an industry-level panel of European countries that allows to divide sectors according to the skill… Show more

“…This has very important implications. Temporary contracts have been found to have a negative effect on productivity (Lisi and Malo 2017). Furthermore, there is evidence that more insecure jobs are associated with higher frequency and severity of injuries (Amuedo-Dorantes 2002;Guadalupe 2003;Fabiano et al 2008;Bender et al 2012;Picchio and Van Ours 2017) and, more generally, higher risk of poor health, of future sickness absences, and of larger use of health services (László et al 2010).…”

“…The contractual staff is made to work six to eight hours and are paid a meager amount without any remarkable perks and allowances [ 14 ]. This leads to a careless attitude and lack of commitment and dedication [ 14 , 15 ]. These staffs are also devoid of social security cover under different legislative provisions, such as the Employees' Provident Fund Act 1952, the Employees' State Insurance Act 1948, the Workmen's Compensation Act 1923 and the Maternity Benefit Act 1961 [ 14 ].…”

“…This structural change in employment composition is the optimal response of employers, who are in the search for lower labour costs and more flexible contract modalities, to shocks to the relative prices of different types of labour as we show below and other types of shocks. However, it poses a challenge as a larger number of temporary workers might affect firm productivity in the long run (see Castellani et al, 2017;Lisi and Malo, 2017). Temporary contracts have been associated with fewer incentives to establish solid labour relations, training, etc.…”
