The Impact of TeamSTEPPS Training on Obstetric Team Attitudes and Outcomes on the Labor and Delivery Unit of a Regional Perinatal Center

Abstract: Objective: We investigated the effect of TeamSTEPPS training on teamwork perceptions and patient safety outcomes in an inpatient obstetrics setting. Study Design: Physicians and nurses from the regional perinatal center were offered TeamSTEPPS instruction and administered a voluntary survey to assess subjective perceptions of team dynamics and patient safety prior to and six months following TeamSTEPPS training. Responses were analyzed using ANOVA and chi-square analysis. Objective measures of patient safety … Show more

“…However, contrasting findings were represented by Kwon and Duzyj who reported no substantial changes in perceptions of team dynamics or behaviors to promote patient safety among the physician and nurses at the regional perinatal center after teamwork training [37]. Similarly, the study conducted by Ahsan et al found no noteworthy differences in attitudes and perceptions toward team communication between intervention and control groups [38].…”

“…Discrepancies in these results might be linked to differing sample sizes. Notably, Kwon and Duzyj collected the data from 20 physicians and 15 nurses before training and from 9 physicians and 20 nurses 6 months post-training [37]. However, the study by Ahsan et al involved 28 nurses in control and intervention groups [38].…”

“…The results of this research revealed significant, positive changes in the experimental group in terms of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The TeamSTEPPS model is a student-centred teaching method and observation system that has been adopted by many colleges and universities 31 , 32 . The results of the new teaching method were consistent with the results of this study with regard to stimulating students’ learning interest and enthusiasm and improving their teaching efficiency.…”

“…Daniels et al [16] demonstrated that precise verbal communication was inconsistent and difficult to incorporate, often yielding question repetition during obstetric emergency management. Strategies such as closed loop communication, call out, repeat back, and SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation) are described as part of TeamSTEPPS (Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety) and can be practiced in the simulated environment [17 ▪ ]. The simulated environment has also been used to identify personality types (e.g., neuroticism) among team members that can hinder overall team communication [18,19].…”
