The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of business strategies and social capital on the performance of small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) that operate in small industry clusters. An emphasis is placed on examining the function of innovation capability in mediating this interaction. Data was acquired by sending questionnaires to various clusters in East Java, Indonesia, utilizing multi-stage sampling. The study then found 98 SME owners who had completed all of the surveys. The Partial Least Square approach was then utilized to evaluate the hypotheses using SmartPLS. The findings show that business strategies have no direct impact on performance. The impact of business strategy on performance appears to be mediated by innovation capabilities. On the other hand, social capital, as measured by bridging and linking social capital, has a direct impact on firm performance. As a result, this study suggests that SMEs improve their performance through increasing cluster social capital and increasing innovation capability. We recommend further research to replicate this study on large industry clusters. It is expected that the interplay between business strategies and social capital to performance will explain different result for the development of industry clusters.

The Jawi Books, an essential component of Islamic teachings in Southeast Asia, plays a vital role in cultural and religious education. Its study in Palembang, Indonesia, provides insights into the processes of cultural reproduction and adaptation within a contemporary context. This qualitative research explores the teaching methods, motivations, and cultural implications associated with studying the Jawi Books in Palembang. The methodology includes interviews with local scholars, observations of teaching sessions, and an analysis of the content and usage of the Jawi Book in various religious assemblies. The research discovered that the primary motivation for studying the Jawi Books is to aid local congregations in understanding Arabic texts. Despite its historical roots, the Jawi Books remains a significant source of religious knowledge, supported by a strong network of scholars across regions such as Kalimantan, Aceh, Malaysia, and Thailand. The teaching methods are varied, combining traditional approaches like the talaqqi method with modern digital platforms, including YouTube. The study uncovers a symbolic power struggle in the interpretation between Hadromaut and local Palembang clerics, suggesting widespread cultural assimilation. The study of the Jawi Books in Palembang is a prime example of cultural reproduction, adapting traditional Islamic teachings to contemporary needs and contexts, which is crucial for maintaining the relevance and transmission of religious knowledge across generations. These findings underscore the importance of local interpretations and teaching methods in preserving cultural and religious identities in an increasingly globalized world.

Small-scale enterprises highly influence the growth of a country. Small-scale enterprises are fundamental in creating employment opportunities for many people, notably in rural areas. Consequently, the study was determined to examine the role of financial institutions in the growth of small and medium enterprises in Japan. The study did a literature review to explore the findings from the preceding studies. The study findings from the majority of the studies showed that financial institutions play a critical role in the growth of small and medium enterprises. The financial institutions provide services and loans that spur the growth of small and medium enterprises. In addition, the financial institutions are involved in providing the startup capital and this increases the sustainability of the small firms. In some instances, the financial institutions provide capacity building to the small enterprises, increasing their skills and knowledge in the management process. The small-scale enterprises encounter many difficulties and the financial instructions become a channel for accessing funds. The factors that limit small and medium enterprises from accessing the loans from the financial institutions is mainly lack of collateral. The study concluded that financial institutions determined the growth of small and medium enterprises in Japan to a large extent. The study recommended that drastic and effective financial policies which directly increase accessibility to available credits from financial institutions ought to be set in Japan. The government needs to sale up a framework that will make the financial institutions increase their lending to the small and medium enterprises. A specialized borrowing system needs to be developed in the financial institutions to carry out small-scale lending functions.
