Introduction: This study explored how global health service learning supported nursing student engagement in the process of cultural humility and how it shaped student understanding of themselves and their ability to develop supportive intercultural relationships. Methods: Written reflections were collected from eight second-year students while on a 9-day practicum in a low-resource Caribbean country. Six students participated in posttrip interviews. Thematic analysis was used to illuminate the students’ lived experience. Results: Four student themes emerged: (1) overcoming challenges, (2) opening our eyes, (3) seeing difference as a strength, and (4) learning with and from each other. While participants were inherently ethnocentric, the process of cultural humility curbed their sense of superiority and enabled the development of supportive intercultural relationships with their hosts. Discussion: This global health service learning was an effective strategy to enhance student nurses’ learning about themselves and intercultural relationships and to develop the attributes of cultural humility.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the extent of awareness of international exchanges among college nursing students in Japan and other countries and to identify strategies to improve awareness. Method: This is an integrative literature review, consisting of scientific articles published on "Ichushi-Web," an Internet-based retrieval service by the Japan Medical Abstracts Society (JAMAS) and Google Scholar for domestic documents and, PubMed, Medline, Cochrane library and Google Scholar for foreign documents. Search parameters for "the years from 2000 to 2017" in combination with "international educational exchange", "schools, nursing", "students, nursing", "program evaluation", and "awareness" were employed. Result: The data were extracted from seven documents among a review of 29 retrieved domestic documents written in Japanese, and another seven documents among a review of 111 retrieved foreign documents written in English. All documents from Japan were reports of quantitative studies, and most documents from other countries were qualitative studies. The data from Japanese research reports were classified into four perspectives: interest in international exchange, need to participate in international exchange, understanding of different cultures and awareness of foreign settlers. The data from research reports from other countries were classified into three perspectives: understanding of different cultures, improving expertise in nursing, and awareness of the international community. Conclusions: Strategies that will enhance students' understanding of diverse cultures are needed to increase their awareness of international exchanges.

Bakgrunn: Det er eit nasjonalt mål at halvparten av alle studentar skal ha eit utanlandsopphald i løpet av studietida. Studentutveksling har vist seg å vere viktig for å oppnå interkulturell kompetanse, men det manglar kunnskap om korleis sjukepleiarane nyttar denne kompetansen i framtidig arbeid. Slik kompetanse er sentral for å møte behovet om likeverdige helse-og sosialtenester i eit eirkulturelt samfunn.Føremål: Føremålet med studien var å utvikle kunnskap om korleis norske ferdigutdanna sjukepleiarar brukar erfaringar frå praksisopphald i det globale sør, i arbeidslivet.Metode: Studien har eit kvalitativt design der det er nytta både opne spørsmål i eit spørjeskjema (n = 77) og individuelle intervju (n = 4) av ferdig utdanna sjukepleiarar som i studietida hadde praksis på Madagaskar. Dataa blei samla inn ved elektroniske spørjeskjema i mai 2020 og intervju hausten 2020. Her fekk informantane spørsmål om praksisoppholdet på Madagaskar, og korleis dei brukar laeringsutbytta frå praksis inn i arbeidslivet.Resultat: Studien viser at erfaringar frå praksisopphald i det globale sør gir interkulturell kompetanse, men òg personleg og fagleg vekst. I etterkant peikar informantane på at dei som ferdigutdanna sjukepleiarar prøver å ha ei bevisst tilnaerming til minoritetspasienten, ettersom dei hugsar korleis det kjendest å vere den som kom utanfrå. Perspektivet takksemd, som i stor grad er knytt til oppleving av ulikskapar i helsetenesta, har for mange gitt motivasjon til å arbeide for å realisere likeverdige helse-og omsorgstenester.Konklusjon: Studien viser at sjukepleiarane har tileigna seg interkulturell kompetanse gjennom praksisperioden på Madagaskar. Dei rapporterer at dei brukar denne kompetansen aktivt i møte med pasientar frå andre kulturar. Funna våre indikerer at tidlegare utanlandsstudentar kan få ei brubyggjarrolle der dei ser behova til minoritetspasienten, samtidig som dei kan tilpasse dei til ein norsk kontekst. Dette kan tyde på at praksisutveksling til det globale sør også i framtida bør ha ein sentral plass i norsk sjukepleiarutdanning.
