The impact of self-protective measures in the optimal interventions for controlling infectious diseases of human population

Abstract: A mathematical model for infectious disease epidemics with behaviour change and treatment is formulated and analysed. It is indicated that behaviour modification by the population has a significant impact on the dynamics of the disease. Moreover, an optimal control theory is applied to propose the best possible combination of efforts in controlling a disease. It is shown that it may not be necessary to continuously apply treatment at a full rate to eradicate the disease, if the effort is supported by effective… Show more

“…The expansion and improvement of HIV and AIDS education around the world is critical to preventing the spread of HIV [37]. Those convinced to apply any of the preventive mechanisms against HIV infection, will enjoy a reduced risk of infection by HIV.…”

“…Then its application in the dynamics is modelled by simply replacing the term α H in (3) by (α H0 + u 2 (t)). Because of practicality and economic limitations on the maximum rate of convincing individuals for behaviour modification, we also assume that α Hmax > 0 to be the maximum rate as indicated in [37] and 0 ≤ α H0 + u 2 (t) ≤ α Hmax ≤ 1.…”
