The Impact Of Sea Level Rise On Developing Countries : A Comparative Analysis

Abstract: Sea level rise (SLR) due to climate change is a serious global threat: The scientific evidence is now overwhelming. Continued growth of greenhouse gas emissions and associated global warming could well promote SLR of 1m-3m in this century, and unexpectedly rapid breakup of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets might produce a 5m SLR. In this paper, we have assessed the consequences of continued SLR for 84 developing countries. Geographic Information System (GIS) software has been used to overlay the best… Show more

“…Projections suggest, for example, that an additional 50 million people and 30 000 km² of land could be affected by coastal storm surges in 2100, with attendant risks of direct deaths and of infectious diseases. 94,95 Involuntary displacement of populations as a result of extreme events has major public health and policy consequences. In the longer term, flooding affects perceptions of security and safety, and can cause depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.…”

“…Vietnam has been reported to be one of the top five countries in the world that likely to be most affected by SLR with "potentially catastrophic" consequences [6]. Observed SLR data from tidal gauges along the coast of Vietnam [4] as shown in Fig.…”

“…Recent research suggests that the sea level may rise by one meter or more in the 21 st century, which would increase the vulnerable population to about one billion by 2050 (Hansen and Sato 2011;Vermeer and Rahmstorf 2009;Pfeffer, et al 2008;Rahmstorf 2007;Dasgupta, et al 2009;Brecht, et al 2012). …”
