The impact of revitalization on the evolution of urban space on former iron and steel works areas in Ruhr region (Germany)

Abstract: The aim of the paper was to consider the extent of the impact of revitalization on the evolution of post-industrial sites, which manifests itself in morphological and functional changes of urban space. Research was performed on three former iron and steel works areas located in the Ruhr region in Germany: one of the Thyssen's ironworks in Duisburg - Meiderich, the area of steelworks complex Gute-Hoffnungs-Hütte in Oberhausen and the area of the iron and steel works Phönix in Dortmund - Hörde. Methods were appl… Show more

“…So that, among these case studies, Ruhr area represents a model of recovery and positive impact of instability on all territorial components of the system through a tertiary-type economic restructuring and the implementation of a sustainable land management built on integrated governance (Wegener 2012, Chmielewska and Otto 2013, Kretschmann 2013, Reuschke et al 2013. A comparison between the Moravian-Silesian region and the Silesian region, which are more similar in terms of evolution and dynamics, shows that the type of addressing instabilitysevere restructuring for the first case; and cautious restructuring grounded on entrepreneurship and a special taxing system, in the second case -constitutes the main factor of achieving or not successful redevelopment (Adamovský andHolešinská 2012, Hajduga 2014).…”

“…The Ruhr region is known for numerous major revitalisation projects which have led to the creation of large-scale leisure and entertainment spaces. The best example of these is the "Neue Mitte" in Oberhausen which has been changed from a former steelworks area into a new city centre with a shopping mall, event halls, museums, sports facilities and amusement centre (CHMIELEWSKA & OTTO, 2013). It is an attractive place for both locals and visitors, but not everybody can afford to visit facilities located there.…”

“…As a consequence many mines and plants were closed down resulting in the creation of brownfield sites and this was the beginning of the revitalisation of this region. Nowadays the Ruhr area is a postindustrial region with developed services and high-tech industries as well as a postmodern place for tourism, leisure and culture, which are strongly attached to its industrial history (CHMIELEWSKA & OTTO, 2013).…”

“…A fine example is provided by the Emscher-Zukunft Masterplan drawn up in 2006, and put into effect in the nearly two decades since along the valley of the Emscher -a river flowing through the very heart of the industrialised Ruhr. Numerous individual transition projects have been pursued in that area (Chmielewska & Otto, 2013;Otto & Chmielewska, 2014) -and the solution overall can be considered a model one worth following as other mining regions make their own efforts to move forward.…”
