The group of seven (G-7) countries are seven of the most advanced global nations. Yet, these nations have not been able to achieve environmentally sustainable economic growth (EG) in the past. Consequently, despite growing economically, the environmental quality in the G-7 countries has persistently deteriorated. Hence, the present study examined the environmental impacts associated with EG, technological innovation, institutional quality (IQ), renewable energy consumption (RENE) and population using the carbon dioxide emission figures to measure environmental quality in the G-7 economies for the period 1996–2018. The econometric analyses involved the application of different estimation techniques that control the cross-sectional dependency and slope heterogeneity issues in the data. Overall, the results indicated that greater EG and higher population size increase environmental pollution by boosting the carbon dioxide emission levels. In contrast, technological innovation, IQ improvement, and greater RENE were found to impede the carbon dioxide emission levels. In line with these key findings, several environmental development-related policies are recommended.

PurposeThis study attempts to recognize the effects of the Pakistan–China free trade agreements (PCFTA) on promoting trade between the two economies.Design/methodology/approachFollowing the concept of revealed comparative advantage (RCA) and free trade agreements, the study first identifies those commodities in which Pakistan and China have a robust RCA and then analyze the effect of PCFTA on the export value of those commodities for the bilateral trade between Pakistan and China. The study used the panel data in which more than the top 150 importers (j) have been selected for each case of Pakistan and China for the period of 2003–2015.FindingsThe study concludes that even with the higher convergence rate, the good RCA does not guarantee a positive effect of the free trade agreement on the commodities.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the existing literature by integrating RCA with the gravity model by adopting a sequential mode for Pakistan–China free trade agreement.

“…In a recent study, Siddique et al, (2020) evaluate the impact of Balassa RCA on the trade balance (TB) of Pakistan by applying non-linear ARDL from 1980 to 2018. The findings reveal that Pakistan's world aggregated income, and selected RCA indices such as vegetables, hides and skin and textile at HS-2 digit level of products have positively and significantly correlated with TB and may help to improve the deficit trade balance of Pakistan during the estimated period whereas, the real effective exchange rate (REER) has insignificant impact on TB of Pakistan due to comparatively low quality products, high inflation and unfavorable cost of production in the presence of gigantic economies like China, India, Taiwan, Malaysia and others in the region.…”

One Of the key objectives of this study is to examine Pakistan’s global leather and leather products competitiveness by utilizing Balassa revealed comparative advantage (BRCA) indices and revealed symmetric comparative advantage indices (RSCA) from 1996 to 2020. Pakistan’s agricultural sector is contributing 19.5% of GDP while, livestock is ranked as the second largest sector of the agriculture sector with a 50% share of value-added goods, and together 10.8% share in GDP. The abundance of raw materials and low cost of production leads to the country a comparative advantage from global perspective. Our findings indicate that Pakistan has comparatively high BRCA index value in hides and skin and leather products that reveal the potential of higher exports and more foreign exchange earnings from this sector at selected HS-06 digits level of products. Additionally, Moreover, the position among various leather product groups under the hides and skin sector indicates a ‘competitive and threatening’, these findings facilitate to the stakeholders and policy makers to improve the quality of livestock and related sectors to enhance economy growth and development of the country.
