Effect of Professional Quality of Life on the Professional Self-Concept of Intensive Care Unit Nurses in Tertiary Hospital

The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing the professional self-concept of nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs). Methods : Data were collected from July 1 to August 15, 2014. The subjects were 206 ICU nurses working in four university hospitals in B and U cities, Korea. Their professional self-concept was measured using Arthur's Scale revised by Yoon (2012), and professional quality of life (QOL) was measured using Pro QOL Korean Ver. 5 developed by Stamm (2010). Data were analyzed with SPSS Ver. 18, using a t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results : Professional self-concept was significantly correlated with compassion satisfaction (r=.61, p<.001), and burn out (r=-.57, p<.001). The factors influencing professional self-concept were compassion satisfaction (β=.46, p<.001), burn out (β=-.27, p<.001), and education level (β=.14, p =.014). The explanatory power of this model was 46.5%. Conclusion : The results suggest that the influencing factors found in this study should be considered when planning nursing intervention programs for improving the professional self-concept of ICU nurses.

Aim: This study was conducted to develop an electrocardiogram education program that incorporates an HTML webpage and blended learning methods to enhance electrocardiogram interpretation skills. Through continual and efficient education, the program aims to assist nurses in providing appropriate care and treatment to patients. Design: Pre-post design study Methods: We developed electrocardiogram interpretation HTML webpage based on electrocardiogram interpretation algorithm and implemented an 18-week (2023.5.15~2023.9.22) electrocardiogram education program, which included daily 5-minute training sessions. Twenty-seven ward nurses were provided with the URL (https://ecgweb.github.io/ECGweb) to the electrocardiogram interpretation HTML webpage and were shared one electrocardiogram case daily for self-interpretation. The Electrocardiogram interpretation performance and confidence were evaluated through questionnaires at three phases: before the program, after 6 weeks of basic electrocardiogram and arrhythmia education, and after 12 weeks of application of the electrocardiogram interpretation HTML webpage and case-based lecture education. Results: The average score for electrocardiogram interpretation performance before electrocardiogram education program was 11.89, after 6 weeks of basic electrocardiogram and arrhythmia education, it was 14.15, and after 12 weeks of application of the electrocardiogram interpretation HTML webpage and case-based lecture education, it was 15.56. This shows that electrocardiogram interpretation performance significantly improved over time (p<.001). Additionally, post-hoc analysis revealed significant differences in electrocardiogram interpretation performance at each stage, i.e., before, during, and after the application of an electrocardiogram education program. Furthermore, electrocardiogram interpretation confidence questionnaire score (pre-Median=18, post-Median=23) was improved significantly after the completion of the 18-week education program (p<.001). Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, I believe that an electrocardiogram education program using HTML webpages and a blended teaching method would be very beneficial in maintaining and improving electrocardiogram interpretation skills of clinical nurses. Such a program can help nurses interpret electrocardiogram more effectively and assist them in making important decisions in patient care.

Purpose : This study aims to assess the extent of work value, psychological ownership, the nursing work environment, and retention intention, examine the correlation between these variables, and identify the factors that influence retention intention. The goal is to provide foundational data to enhance retention intention.Method : The study involved 159 nurses employed at a tertiary general hospital and a general hospital. Data were gathered through structured questionnaires and analyzed using an independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis with a simultaneous stepwise method, all conducted using the SPSS 26.0 software.Results : The intention to remain in the profession was found to have a positive correlation with work value (r = .45, p ＜ .001), psychological ownership (r = .37, p ＜ .001), and the nursing work environment (r = .27, p = .001). Significant factors influencing the intention to stay included total clinical career (β = .17, p = .016), work value (β = .38, p ＜ .001), and psychological ownership (β = .19, p = .020). These variables accounted for 24.1% of the variance in the intention to remain in the profession (F = 17.71, p ＜ .001).Conclusion: To enhance the intention of hospital staff to remain in their positions, it is crucial to identify and bolster positive psychological competencies, such as a sense of work value and psychological ownership.
