The Impact of Patient Support Programs on Adherence to Disease-Modifying Therapies of Patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis in Germany: A Non-Interventional, Prospective Study

Abstract: Introduction: Disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) in multiple sclerosis (MS) are chronic therapies, and patients are likely to face challenges in adhering to DMT dosing regimens over time. DMT manufacturers offer patient support programs (PSPs) to increase adherence. PSPs are managed offerings typically encompassing nurse services, phone services, online resources, or mobile offerings. Patient-support programmes that are offered by DMT manufacturers also have a positive impact on adherence to DMTs in patients with MS [ 62 ]. Jongen et al [ 63 ] also found associations between home care and adherence and between informal care and adherence.…”

“…Our results showed that none of the 385 participants enrolled in the present study had been previously enrolled or was enrolled in a PSP during study time. Compared with other studies, the proportion of patient enrollment in PSPs was only 7.6 percent in a German study in 2020 (14), whereas it was higher in the Japan Fracture Observational Study (JFOS) (39.6%) (15) and a little bit higher in an U.S. study (56.7%) (16). PASSION study included participants from fourteen different countries such as Australia, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Slovakia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom; it showed that 48.7 percent of patients were PSP users (17).…”
