The impact of Ni, Co and Mo supplementation on methane yield from anaerobic mono-digestion of maize silage

Abstract: The objective of this experimental study was to demonstrate the impact of trace metal supplementation, namely nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co) and molybdenum (Mo), on the methane yields obtained from batch mesophilic anaerobic digestion of maize silage as mono-substrate. The maize silage used in this experimental work initially lacked Ni and Co. Trace metal concentration selected was 0.1 and 0.5 mg/L for Ni and Co, respectively, while it was 0.05 and 0.25 mg/L for Mo. The supplementation by Ni, Co and Mo, individually… Show more

“…To avoid a possible undersupply of TE, commercial TE supplements are added to biogas reactors based on the operator’s experience (Lemmer et al, 2010; Schmidt, 2011; Lindorfer et al, 2012; Schmidt et al, 2013; Evranos and Demirel, 2015). Correct dosing of TE supplements is very important, since undersupply can cause process instability or low methane yield, whereas overdosage may have toxic effects on the microorganisms and impairs the compliance of the digestate with the requirements for fertilizer (Thanh et al, 2016).…”

“…Ni and Co are important metal ions for methanogenesis and their supplementation to anaerobic bioreactors may be beneficial for methane production (Gustavsson et al, 2011; Evranos and Demirel, 2015). However, several studies show that no significant enhancement is obtained from metal addition, or that the benefit is dependent on the substrate fed to the microorganisms (Zandvoort et al, 2006b; Park et al, 2010).…”

“…Nanotechnology and NPs are attracting increasing attention among researchers owing to their unique characteristics. NPs are used in various branches of science and industry, also to improve the productivity of biogas . However, further studies are needed to understand fully the impact of NPs on activity of microorganisms, and to determine optimal conditions for an AD process.…”
