“…The beneficial effect of music, as suggested by this local study on Chinese subjects and the one conducted in the USA [ 8 ], is not limited to intravitreal injections, but extends to cataract surgery [ 4 , 6 , 7 , 9 ] and other nonocular clinical procedures including mechanical ventilation, positron emission tomography scan, and gynaecological operation [ 10 12 ]. Besides benefiting the patients, music generally also helps to relax and calm the OR staff and may even enhance their performance, including the surgeon's [ 13 – 15 ].…”

“…At the same time, the self-sufficiency of women can make it easier to relax outside the clinic. On the contrary, in some other studies, music's effectiveness in reducing stress and cortisol levels were not determined (Aba et al, 2017;Cheung et al, 2018;Stocker et al, 2016). Some factors, such as choosing the music by the researcher and performing music only during procedures, can influence study results.…”

“…Sample size was calculated for the outcome of pain using the visual analog scale (VAS) (10 point scale, scored as 0 to 10, 0 being no pain sensation and 10 being the worst possible pain sensation), assessed after the procedure (TVOR). A previous study found a difference of one point on the VAS scale in women who were offered music therapy as compared with no music during oocyte retrieval 23 . In order to detect a similar difference of at least one point in VAS score between the study groups with power of 80% and two‐sided significance ( α ) of 0.05, a sample of 55 women was required in each group making the total sample size of 110 women.…”

“…A randomized controlled trial (RCT) comprising 93 Turkish women reported significant improvement in pain and anxiety levels during oocyte retrieval in women who were offered music therapy 22 . Another similar trial conducted in China with 209 infertile women reported that there was no beneficial effect of music therapy during oocyte retrieval, with comparable pain and anxiety scores in both study groups 23 . Due to the paucity of evidence on the effectiveness of music therapy for pain relief during oocyte retrieval we planned to assess whether music therapy could be used as an effective adjuvant to conscious sedation for relieving pain and anxiety during transvaginal oocyte retrieval.…”
