The Impact of Multiple Autoclave Cycles on the Surface Roughness of Thermally Treated Nickel-Titanium Endodontic Files

Abstract: In this study, we evaluate the surface roughness (SR) of three thermally treated nickel-titanium rotary instruments (i.e., TruNatomy [TN], ProTaper Gold [PTG], and EdgeTaper Platinum [ETP]) after impact testing with multiple autoclave sterilization cycles using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Overall, 60 thermally treated files were sourced (i.e., 20 TN, 20 ETP, and 20 PTG files), and each group was divided into four equal subgroups of five files (n = 5). An unsterilized group was assigned as the pre-autoc… Show more

“…Conversely, this study noted a decrease in surface irregularities after the initial use and the first sterilization cycle for all groups, as observed in the initial SEM analysis. This is in line with previous studies in the literature [ 35 , 36 ]. Van-Pham's study [ 36 ] highlighted reduced porosity on the surfaces of Wave One Gold and Reciproc Blue after root canal preparation, potentially attributed to instrument wear during use.…”

“…Group (cycle 0) served as the control group with files left without autoclave sterilization. The other three groups were treated with different numbers of autoclave sterilization cycles (one, five, and 10 cycles) ( Ba-Hattab et al, 2022 ). During each cycle, the files were sterilized for 4 min at 132 °C under 29 psi pressure in a steam sterilizer (Steris Amsco Century Prevac Steam Sterilizer V148 h, USA) and then dried for 5 min ( Almohareb et al, 2021 ).…”
