“…In addition, moderate CO 2 led to twofold increase in N 2 O emissions , changed soil nitrogen dynamics , decreased methane uptake (Kolb et al, 2005) and increased soil acid phosphatase activity (Guenet et al, 2012). However, the lack of changes in total soil carbon and nitrogen contents in the moderate CO 2 rings at Gi-FACE (Angel et al, 2012) likely contributed to the lack of a more substantial change in soil bacterial communities as observed here.…”

“…The free-air experiment in Giessen has been described elsewhere in detail (J€ ager et al, 2003;Guenet et al, 2012); briefly, it consists of three pairs of rings 8 m in diameter; each pair, in turn, consists of an ambient (currently approximately 400 ppm CO 2 ) and a moderate CO 2 (20 % above ambient, currently approximately 480 ppm) treatment rings, with a total of six rings. Samples were taken from moderate CO 2 rings in high (n=3), medium (n=3) and low (n=3) moisture, and an equal number of samples was taken for each moisture level from ambient CO 2 rings (18 samples in total).…”
